I first was introduced to Chestnuts by a stranger at a local farmer's market about 5 years ago. I was checking to see what these amazing nuts were when a gentleman came up to me and gave me tips on how to choose these nuts and also how to cook/eat these. Since then I get these nuts home whenever I spot them in the market. Later on I read up on the nutritive value of these nuts from here. It is so easy to roast and also is a very filling snack. So next time you spot it in the supermarket, don't ignore these delicious nuts!

Chestnuts

Ingredients -

Chestnuts 3 cups

Method Of Preparation -

Clean the chestnuts.

Chestnuts

Use a sharp knife to cut an X into one side of each chestnut, or prick chestnuts with a fork to allow steam to escape.

Arrange the chestnuts on a microwave safe plate (in a single layer - about 8-10) with the cut sides up.

In 1 minute intervals, nuke them for about 3 min. (The first batch was done in 4 min and the subsequent batches took 3 min).

They are done when they can be easily peeled.

Peel the nuts when they are cool enough to handle, and enjoy.

  15. i was taught that after roasting them in the mv. wrap them up quickly in a teatowel for a minute or so, this will cause them to sweat and help you to peel them much easier.

  17. There is a problem in your directions. You did not mention how many you were cooking at one time. If you double the batch, presumably you would double the cooking time. Batch size unknown, who knows how long they should cook.

  19. The instructions say 8-10 chestnuts

  21. @Susan Gregory - The chestnuts need to be done in batches; so 8-10 in each batch

  23. I've used the following method: Cut a slit in the side of each chestnut so they won't explode. Put them in a microwave safe dish with lukewarm water to almost cover. Put a lid on, and microwave on full power for 1.5 minutes. When you get them out, they will be hot. Drain the water and when they are a bit cooler, peel the nuts. The peel should come off easily. If the inner hairy covering doesn't come off as well (and it seem totally random), put the nuts in lukewarm water and soak for 10 muntes or so. Then you can scrape most of the inner covering off. I don't worry too much about getting it all off. Then cook the nuts in the microwave for 4 minutes.
