BM #87 Day 5 -
Chira Doi Gur is a traditional breakfast served during the Assamese New Year celebrations, Bihu. Chira = Poha (Flattened Rice), Doi = Yogurt and Gur = Jaggery. I am told that palm jaggery is traditionally used but I have used the regular jaggery powder.
Although this is served as part of 'Jolpaan', meaning any type of meal (breakfast, lunch or snack), in weddings and other auspicious occasions, it is a must-have as part of Bihu celebrations.
The Chira doi gur is served in a special metal cup which is made from Brass and some other metal. It is apparently a traditional craft of Assam. I came to understand that Chira Doi Gur is served in many states in the North Eastern part of India, including Odisha and West Bengal.

Yogurt 2-3 cups or as needed
Jaggery, powdered as needed

Wash the poha and drain. Leave it for a few minutes. This will make the poha softer and easier to chew.

Here in south tamilnadu also, poha is the main food for Tamil New Year's celebration. We still follow that tradition of make poha with palm jaggery on every new year. Amazed by the fact how the traditions are so close even geographical regions are miles apart. BTW, the poha looks so creamy and delicious.

Such authentic dishes makes me happy. We do make a similar version of poha, but with sugar. Jaggery would impart a really traditional flavour to the dish. Looks so inviting..
So good to learn about the different cuisines. Love this simple to put together breakfast and it has the perfect balance of protein, carb and iron for the mornings.

Chira Doi Gur sounds so Bengali .. but is actually Assamese . I recently visited this state and loved the place , it has natural beauty . No wonder a nice bowl with all these natural ingredients should be so good . Very earthy and rustic recipe .
Wow, I never thought of serving chivda this way. The combo of chivda dahi and gur must be amazing and I can imagine the flavors.

I love this chira dahi breakfast. I made it for another group as a part of the Bihari cuisine and loved it. Its the Indian answer to a parfait if served with fruits too.
Excellent find Harini even though a simple fare. I will try it out when real Spring is in the picture.
