Warm Apple Crisp

W for Warm Apple Crisp under Baked Dishes for BM #32.

I had first tasted a similar kind of dessert, 'Warm Apple Crostata' in the restaurant Chain 'Olive Garden'. I instantly fell in love with it but felt it was overly sweet. I usually order it without any toppings to cut down on sugar.

Then the thought came that I should figure out a way to make it a little healthier and so here is a low sugar, high fiber version which will please your guests and loved ones.

Recipe Source - The Vegetarian Mother's Cookbook by Cathe Olson
Ingredients -

Apples peeled, cored and cubed 5-6 cups (approx 6 apples)
Lemon Juice 2 Tbsp
Water or Apple Juice 1 Tbsp
Sweetener 1 Tbsp (Maple Syrup, Agave Nectar or Honey)
Cinnamon Powder 1 tsp

Topping  -
Rolled Oats, coarsely ground 1 cup
Wheat Germ 1/2 cup
Walnuts, chopped 1 cup
Nutmeg Powder 1/2 tsp
Cloves, Powdered 1/4 tsp
Salt 1/4 tsp
Unsalted Butter 3-4 Tbsp (I used clarified butter(ghee))
Sweetener 3 Tbsp (Maple Syrup, Agave Nectar or Honey)

Method Of Preparation -

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a baking pan. I used 6 X 13 rectangular pan.

Toss the apples with lemon juice, water, sweetener and cinnamon.

Spread evenly in the pan.

To Prepare the topping -
Mix the oats, wheat germ, nuts, spices and salt.

Heat butter and mix the sweetener until smooth.

Add it to the oat mixture until combined.

Cover apples with the topping.

Bake for 30 min or until golden.

Serve it with Vanilla Ice cream for a delicious dessert!
