Are you looking for an Easy-Breezy-Healthy Breakfast/Snack for kids/adults alike? Then this  post might interest you. I am in an eternal search for menu ideas for my picky eaters. My kids somehow refused to accept Pesarattu or Poha Upma  (shall post both the recipes later) and that kind of put me in a fix as moong dal is supposed to be very easily digestible and is a good source of protein too. While I was googling, I came across this combo but I am extremely sorry that I didn't make a note of the site. I thought I should try this combo for the kids. These were super crispy on the outside and soft in the inside and surely won their hearts! 


Pesarapappu Atukula Ponganalu


Ingredients -


Moong Dal / Pesarapappu 3/4 cup
Aval/Atukulu/Beaten Rice/Poha 1/2 cup (I used the thin variety)
Onions finely chopped 1/2 tsp
Spinach finely chopped 2 Tbsp
Carrot Grated 2 Tbsp
Salt as per taste
Ginger Grated 1/2 tsp (or to taste)
Pepper powder to taste
Coriander leaves (I didn't add as I was in a hurry)
Green Chillies (I didn't add as I was cooking for kids)
Cumin seeds/ Jeera 1 tsp
Hing/Asafoetida 2 pinches
Oil to spray on (as required)


Method Of Preparation - 


Soak Moong Dal for 30 min in hot water. (Or in cold water for about 2 hrs or so).


Soak Aval/Atukulu also for about 5-10 min.


Drain moong dal and aval. Grind them into a not so smooth batter along with green chillies and ginger if using.


Transfer the batter into a mixing bowl, add the onions, spinach, carrots, jeera, hing and salt.


Mix them well into a thick batter. 


Heat the paniyaram/ ponganala penam and add a few drops of  oil in each spot.


Add a tablespoon of batter in each spot and cover with a lid. 


After the bottom portion is brown enough flip each of them up-side down and let it cook for a couple min more.


Repeat for the entire batter and enjoy hot ponganalu with chutney of your choice. But my kids had it with ketchup!

I served them for a weekend snack and they disappeared in a few minutes. (Had to struggle to get the pictures!)

  41. Growing up, somehow I hated moong and now my kids do the same, especially pesarattu is not a favorite of any one at home, except me.
    This one looks like a good one to try. Let me soak some moongdal right away for evening snack. :)

  49. Tried this recipie today. Outside layer was crisp but inside very soggy. I cooked on slow flame for lot of time. But still inside not cooked.
