My Mom used to make Bread Upma during our childhood. But I never got to make this at home until very recently. In my recent trip to India, my sister-in-law, Lakshmi gave me this recipe and so I thought I would try it out. Here in this recipe I made a powder of the bread slices whereas my mom would just make bite size pieces. I thought I should have added few pieces of tomato also as this bread upma was very dry but tasty, nonetheless. Here is a quick breakfast/snack which is very simple to prepare.

Bread Upma

Ingredients -

Bread Slices 6
Turmeric 1/8 tsp
Green chillies 1-2
Onions chopped 1/2 cup
Salt to taste
Seasoning (Oil 2 tsp, Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp, Chana Dal 1 tsp. Urad Dal 1 tsp, Curry leaves a few)
Lemon Juice couple sprinkles!
Chopped Coriander leaves for garnish

Note- Addition of other chopped veggies would be a good idea.

Method Of Preparation -

Cut the bread slices into small pieces and powder them in a blender. I thought it would ball up but surprisingly the result was a very fluffy powder !

In a heated wok/kadai, add the oil and the rest of the seasoning. After the dals are brown and the mustard seeds crackle, its time to saute the onions and the chopped green chillies.

After the onions are golden brown, add the turmeric, bread powder and salt. Mix it well and switch off the flame in 2 min.

Squeeze a little lemon juice if desired and serve hot!

  13. I know this is such a simple and quick one if you like it. I have tried both with bread pieces and the bread powder upmas. Don't know why but some how our family couldn't enjoy both the versions. :(
