Matikkaya Podi

Goruchikkudukaya aka Matikkaya aka Cluster Beans is one of our favorite vegetables in the bean family. The other day when we visited my cousin, my maternal aunt who is staying with them, shared some age old recipes from her family.

This curry is one such. The biggest advantage of making this curry was I didn't have to painstakingly chop them with a knife! I just popped them into the food chopper :).

Here is the recipe for Day 4 Week 2 of BM #27.

Ingredients -

Goruchikkudu kaya / Cluster Beans, coarsely ground 2 cups
Seasoning (Oil 1 Tbsp, Chana Dal 1 tsp, Urad Dal 1 tsp, Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp, Mustard seeds 1/2 seeds, Curry leaves)
To Grind -
Onions 1/2 cup
Green Chillies 1-2
Coconut Powder 2 Tbsp (Optional but preferable)

Matikkaya Podi

Method Of Preparation -

Boil the coarsely ground cluster beans with as little water as possible and set aside.

In a pan, heat oil and prepare the seasoning by adding the chana dal, urad dal, cumin seeds and mustard seeds.

After the mustard seeds pop, and the dals are brown, add the onion paste and saute till the raw onion smell disappears.

Add the boiled cluster beans and sprinkle salt. Mix well and cook until the mixture resembles bread crumbs.

Remove and serve hot with Rice and dal.
