A few days back, Amma told me that she had prepared Moong Dal payasam to beat the heat. Though summer is still a long way for us in this part of the world, I had an urge to have this kheer. Does it happen to you too? You hear of some nice recipe and you have an unstoppable urge to make it and taste it. Ya, I gave in to that urge and the result was this payasam. But I had already posted Moong Dal Kheer. So when I found some cubed pumpkin in the freezer, I knew what to make!! Just as I had imagined, the combo was too good to pass! So this is for Day 6 of BM #5.
This forms part of the menu for 'Design A Menu -3' happening here in Tamalapaku.
Ingredients -
Moong Dal/Pesara Pappu 1/2 cup
Pumpkin (Red), peeled and cubed 1 cup (Butternut Squash can also be used)
Sugar 1/2 cup (or more as per taste)
Cardamom Powder 1/4 tsp
Milk 3 cups
Nuts for garnish
Method Of Preparation -
Wash moong dal and add the cubed pumpkin to it. Add adequate water and pressure cook the combination.
After the pressure cooker is safe to be opened, mash the contents with a masher or by using the back of a ladle.
In a separate non stick sauce pan, boil milk while continuously stirring and add the boiled and mashed moong dal-pumpkin mixture.
Keep stirring and add sugar. After about 5-6 min when the mixture starts to thicken, add the cardamom powder and remove from fire.
Garnish with nuts of your choice and enjoy.

Very colorful. I think we (atleast me) could have gone for months, if given only the option of kheers.
