Here is the much awaited Blogging Marathon #5 and I have chosen to blog under the theme 'Curry in a Hurry'. We are always looking for ways to finish off cooking as soon as possible, right? Specially when the temperatures start climbing and staying in the kitchen becomes more of a torture than pleasure, cooking in a hurry makes a lot of sense, don't you all think? So here all this week, I will attempt at cooking curries under 30 min. Hope you all will take a peek and enjoy the flavors!!
Here is the recipe for Day one. I got this recipe from a friend, Vani. Thanks Vani for a wonderful recipe. Though I didn't cook the way she suggested, I stuck to her recipe for the most part to cook under 30 min.
Here is the recipe for Day one. I got this recipe from a friend, Vani. Thanks Vani for a wonderful recipe. Though I didn't cook the way she suggested, I stuck to her recipe for the most part to cook under 30 min.
Ingredients -
Cabbage, finely chopped 2-3 cups
Onions , finely chopped 1/2 cup
Tomatoes, chopped 1 cup
Ginger - Garlic paste 1 tsp
Turmeric 1/4 tsp
Red Chilli Powder 1/2 tsp
Cloves 4
Cardamom seeds from 2 pods
Cinnamon 1/2 inch piece (I used a pinch of cinnamon powder)
Salt as per taste
Coriander leaves for garnish
Seasoning (Oil 1-2 Tbsp, Jeera 1/2 tsp)
Method Of Preparation -
In a heated sauce pan, add a teaspoon of oil and saute the onions until translucent. Add ginger-garlic paste and tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes are mushy.
Meanwhile powder the cloves, cardamom pods and cinnamon using a mortar-pestle or a spice grinder. Keep it aside.
Remove the cooked onion-tomato mixture and make a paste upon cooling.
Clean the sauce pan and put it again on medium heat. Add the remaining oil and saute the jeera. Add the ground onion-tomato paste, turmeric, red chilli powder and clove-cardamom-cinnamon powder cook till oil oozes out.
Now is the time to add the finely chopped cabbage and mix well. [In fact I had semi cooked the cabbage for 4-5 min in the microwave to make it even faster.] Also add in the salt as per taste, cover with a lid and let it cook for about 7-8 min. [I am told that the whole mixture can be cooked in a rice cooker to get a pulao feel to the curry! - I chose not to do that as it won't get done in 30 min :)]
Remove from fire and garnish with coriander leaves just before serving.
Tastes great with Roti/Naan or even with steaming hot rice. I felt it tasted even better with curd rice :)
Now time to take a peek at what my fellow Marathoners are cooking as part of BM#5

Bagundi. Another cabbage dish which would be useful when a gravy is preferred. I usually go with cabbage sagu when using onion - tomato mixture but never tried using a garam masala version.
I too have a cabbage post planned for this BM. :)

Hi Harini, thanks for your comments on my Dal Banjari :)
Just wanted to answer your question about the difference between Dal Makhani and Dal Banjari - Dal Makhani is a combo of "Whole Black Urad Dal and Red Kidney Beans", but Dal Banjari is a combo of "Whole Black Urad Dal and Split Bengal Gram Dal". Hope that helps :)
Looks fabulous! very quick and scrumptious too. Happy to be running BM#5 with you. I have chosen the same theme too. :)
