Don't be surprised looking at the title. I know what you are thinking. How come I get to blog about this when I am running a marathon under the theme 'Curry in a Hurry', right? Here is the thing. Since every 15th of the month, the recipe from Indian Cooking Challenge needs to be posted, today's 'curry in a hurry' post is exempted (Thanks to Srivalli) !
When I saw the recipe of these rolls, I was very interested to see how the spicy blend lends a punch to the tongue. And these rolls sure didn't disappoint. The only down side for me when I was preparing these rolls was I had too many things going on in the kitchen and so ended up with some overly cooked rolls (which by the way didn't compromise the taste, just the looks).
Also today's post forms part of the Blogging Marathon Day 7 (as an exception!)

Ingredients -
For Outer Covering -
Besan/ Senagapindi 1/2 cup
Whole Wheat Flour 1/2 cup
Hot Oil 2 Tbsp
Salt to taste
Chilli Powder 1/2 tsp (or to taste)
For the Filling -
Coriander Leaves, finely chopped 1 cup
Onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup
Dry Coconut, grated and roasted 2 Tbsp
Gasalu/Poppy Seeds/Khus Khus, roasted 1Tbsp
Til/Sesame Seeds/Nuvvulu, roasted 1Tbsp
Salt to taste
Ginger-Green Chilli paste 1 tsp (or to taste)
Garlic, Chopped fine 2 cloves
Chilli Powder 1/2 tsp (or to taste)
Lemon Juice 1 tsp (or to taste)
Sugar 3/4 tsp
Oil 1 Tbsp
Make a Paste -
2 tsp oil + 1tsp garam masala + 2 tsp thick tamarind pulp
[I used the store bought tamarind chutney instead]
Oil to deep fry
Method Of Preparation -
For the outer Covering -
In a mixing bowl, add all the ingredients required for the covering, including the hot oil and knead into a stiff dough adding adequate water.
For the Filling-
In a heated pan add oil and saute the onions till they are translucent. Add the ginger paste and minced garlic and fry for a few seconds.
Remove from the fire. Let it cool.
Coarsely grind the roasted til, poppy seeds and coconut .
Add the coriander leaves to the onion mixture along with all the powders.
Mix in salt , sugar, lemon juice and chilli powder.
Making the Rolls -
Pinch a gooseberry sized dough, roll it thinly to the size of a puri (about 3 inches diameter). [I found that this size is easily manageable but feel free to alter the size as preferred]
Apply a little tamarind chutney on the rolled dough using the back of a spoon.
Place about 1 tablespoon of filling in the center of the rolled dough and seal the edges in any way convenient. [I put the filling in the center, then folded one side into the center and then folded the other to the center and sealed the opened edges using wet fingers.]
*Make sure the edges are well sealed because it may result in spoiling the recipe by opening up when frying in the oil
Continue with the rest of the dough until the filling is used up. I used the leftover dough to make small puris (in different shapes to amuse the little one!) and the kids had a feast for sure!
Lightly roast the rolls on a heated tawa/griddle, and then deep fry before serving.
I served them as is as the spice was just right. But the ideal serving accompaniment is green or sweet chutney.
